Since 2007, REANNZ has operated and supported specialist in high-performance digital network. From July 2025, following the integration of the New Zealand e-Science Infrastructure (NeSi), REANNZ now provides a national hub for eResearch, offering advanced network services, high-performance computing, cloud, AI, and data analytics platforms, alongside researcher-focused support.
We are a small, highly skilled, and collaborative team delivering practical, high-impact solutions for researchers and the wider sector.
The Role
As a Data Science Engineer, you will work closely with researchers across New Zealand to design, build, and deploy AI and data-driven solutions that address and tackle real world research challenges. You will support projects end to end, from requirements gathering and model development through to deployment and improvement. Working with colleagues across REANNZ, you will help ensure research solutions are robust, reproducible, and scalable.
Alongside hands-on technical work, you will contribute to building machine learning and data science capability across the research community through mentoring, training, and the promotion of modern research software practices.
This role suits someone who enjoys applied problem-solving, collaboration with researchers, and seeing their work make a tangible impact.
What you will be doing:
Working with researchers to scope and deliver AI and data science solutions
Developing, testing, and deploying machine learning models
Building and maintaining data pipelines and supporting infrastructure
Supporting models in production and monitoring performance
Applying best practices in research software engineering and reproducibility
Contributing to training and capability-building activities
Sharing insights on emerging AI and data science trends
What we are looking for:
Essential
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (PhD level is highly desirable)
Experience applying data analytics or machine learning to real-world problems
Experience with frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or scikit-learn
Strong programming skills in Python
Experience with data engineering and data wrangling
Understanding of good research software engineering practices
Strong communication skills and interest in working with researchers
Preferred
Experience with generative AI, large language models, or computer vision
Experience deploying models to production
Familiarity with cloud platforms or MLOps tools
Experience in research, education, or high-performance computing environments
